GPT-6.1 Terra

Released

GPT-6.1 Terra is an AI model released by OpenAI on Monday, Oct 26 2026, 27 days after GPT-6.1 Sol. It has a 1.05M token context windowHow much information the model can work with in one request, measured in tokens — pieces of words or other data. This includes your question, attachments, conversation and reply. Limits can vary by model variant and provider.. Benchmark results (shown below) cover OpenAI Factuality (Internal), OSWorld 2.1 (offline), Agent's Last Exam, MMMU-Pro, Terminal-Bench 4.0, and Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1.

API pricing

Up to 272K input tokens
InputWhat you pay for everything you send the model — your question, plus any documents or earlier conversation you include with it.
$1.00
Cached inputA reduced rate for text you send over and over. If every request starts with the same instructions or the same document, the provider keeps a copy ready and charges less to read it again.
$0.05
Cache writeA one-off charge for storing text so later requests can reuse it at the cheaper cached rate.
$1.25
OutputWhat you pay for the text the model writes back. It is normally the dearer half: producing an answer costs more than reading one.
$5.00
Over 272K input tokens
InputWhat you pay for everything you send the model — your question, plus any documents or earlier conversation you include with it.
$2.00
Cached inputA reduced rate for text you send over and over. If every request starts with the same instructions or the same document, the provider keeps a copy ready and charges less to read it again.
$0.10
Cache writeA one-off charge for storing text so later requests can reuse it at the cheaper cached rate.
$2.50
OutputWhat you pay for the text the model writes back. It is normally the dearer half: producing an answer costs more than reading one.
$7.50
  • Reasoning or thinking is supported.
USD per 1M tokensEvery price here is for one million tokens. A token is roughly three-quarters of a word, so a million tokens is about 750,000 words of text.Verified October 19, 2026Read from developers.openai.com. Click the check to open the source.

Benchmarks

Terminal & CLI

Terminal-Bench 4.0Agentic terminal coding — Can the AI work in a command-line terminal — running commands and finishing technical setup tasks the way a developer would? Version 4.0 recalibrated how much time, CPU and memory each task gets, removed eight tasks and fixed nineteen, so fewer runs fail for reasons that have nothing to do with the model. Scores are not comparable with earlier versions. Higher is better.

Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1Agentic scientific computing — The same command-line setup as Terminal-Bench, pointed at scientific work: the AI has to drive research tooling and computational workflows through to a result, rather than administer a machine. Version 0.1 is the first release of the task set, and scores run lower than on the general board. Higher is better.

Agentic & tool use

OSWorld 2.1 (offline)Agentic computer use — Can the AI actually operate a computer — clicking, typing, and using real apps — to finish tasks on its own? Version 2.1, in its offline setting. Scores are not comparable with version 2.0. Higher is better.

Agent's Last ExamAgentic computer use — A hard set of desktop and operating-system tasks an AI agent has to finish by looking at the screen and working the machine itself. The score is the share it passes outright — partial credit does not count. Higher is better.

Multimodal

MMMU-ProMultimodal reasoning — A tougher version of MMMU — college-level questions that mix images, diagrams, and text together. Higher is better.

Robustness

OpenAI Factuality (Internal)Factual error rate — OpenAI's internal test uses prompts designed to provoke factual mistakes. The score is the percentage of answers containing at least one factual error, at the model's best published reasoning effort. It is not the percentage of individual claims that are wrong or an error rate for everyday use. Lower is better.

About

GPT-6.1 Terra was introduced on October 26, 2026 as OpenAI's fast, efficient model for visual reasoning, computer use and writing. Its documented uses included matching product photographs to catalogue entries, interpreting technical drawings, working with application screens and revising text. The release gave the GPT-6 family a Terra option alongside Astra, Sol and Luna, extending the tier name introduced with GPT-5.6 into a model focused on everyday visual and language tasks.

The API supported text and image inputs, with tool calling through the Responses API and reasoning effort ranging from none to maximum. Developers could therefore choose immediate responses or allocate more reasoning to a difficult request. At launch, OpenAI reported 85.5% on MMMU-Pro and 74.2% on the OSWorld 2.1 offline set at maximum effort. Those results measured different aspects of visual understanding and computer use under specific evaluation conditions; application performance also depended on the tools, instructions and reasoning setting used.
