Grok-2 entered beta in August 2024 alongside Grok-2 mini, expanding xAI's assistant lineup into a larger model and a smaller alternative. xAI described improvements in reasoning, coding and following instructions, and made the beta available through Grok on X. The rollout was staged, with developer API access described separately from the initial consumer release.
The launch emphasized text and vision understanding, while the Grok product also introduced image generation powered by Black Forest Labs' FLUX.1. That image generator was a separate model integrated into the experience.
